WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-Barton College senior forward Taylor Parrish scored the game-winning goal for the second match in a row and junior goalkeeper Carson Moore posted her third straight shutout in the net as the Lady Bulldogs blanked host Salem College, 1-0, in double-overtime Wednesday afternoon.
Parrish scored 4:56 into the second 10-minute overtime period, putting away the ball after a scramble ensued following a free kick from senior midfielder Adrianna Jimenez.
The goal, Parrish's third in two matches, gave Barton (3-2) its third straight win and its first victory in three tries this year on the road. The Spirits, a member of the NCAA Division III Great South Athletic Conference, lost for the first time this season, falling to 3-1-2.
Moore, a First-Team All-Conference netminder, recorded six saves in keeping Salem off the scoreboard for the first time all year. Moore and the Lady Bulldog defense have not allowed a goal in the team's last 295 minutes of game action.
Part of the Barton defense's success came from not allowing the Spirits' leading scorer, Mackenzie Schmidt a shot on goal in the match. Schmidt managed just one attempt late in regulation, but the shot was wide.
Salem had its best opportunities midway through the opening period. Moore posted two saves in less than a minute's time, the first on a shot by Taylor Norman in the 20th minute, and the second on an attempt by Tarryn Bundy 28 seconds later. Bundy, who led the Spirits with six shots taken and four on goal, fired another attempt which Moore stopped nine minutes later.
The Lady Bulldogs managed just one shot on goal in the first half, but picked up the pace in the second period, firing five shots that were stopped by Salem goalkeeper Paige Ketchum, who had eight total saves on the night. Both keepers were tested late in regulation, with Ketchum halting a Jodi Barber shot for Barton in the 85th minute and Moore stopping another Bundy attempt with two minutes to play.
Barton got off two shots and Salem one in the first overtime period, and the Lady Bulldogs had both attempts in the second extra frame, the last one the Parrish winner. Her shot cracked a stingy Spirits defense that has not allowed more than one goal in a game this season.
Barton recorded 13 total shots, nine on goal, while Salem posted 11 shots, six on goal.
Moore's shutout was the eighth of her career, and her six saves left her just four shy of 300 for her career.
The Lady Bulldogs will seek a fourth straight win on Saturday afternoon when they host Erskine College (0-5) in the conference opener for both schools. Match time is 5 p.m. at the Barton Soccer Field as part of Barton College's Family Weekend.
