The Lady Bulldogs saw their second three-game winning streak of the year come to an end Saturday in a 2-0 loss at Lees-McRae College. Barton, now 6-4 overall and 2-2 on the road, was held to just one shot on goal in suffering its third shutout of the season.
Sophomore Jodi Barber continues to hold the team lead in points with 12, while Taylor Parrish and Emily Futral share the team lead in goals with five each. Barber and senior Kasey Byzewski both have four assists, which is tied for best in the conference.
Junior keeper Carson Moore recorded a season-high 11 saves last Tuesday in an overtime win at Bluefield College, and added eight more stops in the loss at Lees-McRae. She ranks third in the league in total saves with 62, and fourth in save percentage at .816. She has a 1.33 goals against average and four shutouts.
In their last six meetings, Barton and St. Andrews have produced four ties and one win for each side. The Knights took a 2-0 decision in Wilson, N.C., in 2010, and Barton claimed a 5-2 win in Laurinburg, N.C., in 2011. Last year, two squads battled to a 1-1 tie in Wilson. Parrish scored the Lady Bulldogs' goal in that contest off an assist from Ashley Batchelor. Gemma Dugo collected the Knights' goal on a penalty kick.
St. Andrews Women's Soccer
St. Andrews, now a member of the NAIA Appalachian Athletic Conference, enters Tuesday's contest with a 3-8 record. The Knights got off to a 3-3 start, but have lost their last five in a row, most recently suffering a 3-1 setback to Montreat College. Another loss during that stretch was a 3-0 shutout at the hands of Mount Olive College on Oct. 1. Less than a week earlier, Barton defeated Mount Olive, 1-0, in double-overtime.
The Knights have scored 11 goals this year while allowing 22. Scoring for St. Andrews has been balanced, with five different players recording two goals each. Sophomore Hayley Peck, one of those with a pair of goals, also has two assists to lead the team with six points. Sophomore Jessica Martinez is the top returning scorer, having produced five goals for a total of 10 points in 2012.
St. Andrews has used two different keepers, sometimes in the same match, but junior Jessica Griffith has gotten the start in eight of the 11 contests. Griffith has a 1.77 goals against average, having surrendered 16 goals. She has 53 saves and a .768 save percentage. Sophomore Brittany Roberts started 17 matches last year in goal for the Knights, but has made just three starts so far this season, with a 2.68 goals against average.
