BLUEFIELD, Va.–Taylor Parrish scored an unassisted goal 3:34 into the second overtime period to lift Barton College to a 2-1 victory over host Bluefield College in non-conference women's soccer action Tuesday night at East River Soccer Complex.
The goal was the third game-winner of the year for the Smithfield, N.C., senior and the second she recorded in double-overtime. Parrish also has an assist on a game-winning double-overtime goal.
The win for Barton (6-3) was its sixth in its last seven matches, and its third of the year in double-overtime. Bluefield, an NAIA Division I member of the Mid-South Conference, dropped to 5-5 on the year.
The Lady Bulldogs nearly won the match in regulation, as they held a 1-0 lead with four minutes to play. Ten seconds later, however, the Rams recorded the equalizer on Jessica Newman's fourth goal of the year off an assist from Pip Pattison.
Bluefield's goal came less than three minutes after Barton's Ashley Batchelor rocked a shot off the post, and 12 minutes after a Lady Bulldog defender stopped another Newman attempt from going in.
Parrish took a pair of shots early in the first overtime that were saved by Bluefield keeper Kayla Richardson, and Newman and Pattison both got off attempts in the final 15 seconds of the first extra frame, with Newman's attempt saved by Barton keeper Carson Moore.
In the second extra frame, Pattison recorded a shot that was saved by Moore 3:12 into the period, and 22 seconds later Parrish found the net for the game-winner, her fifth goal of the year.
Parrish is now tied for the team lead in goals with sophomore Emily Futral, who collected her fifth goal of 2013 with roughly eight minutes to go in the first half. The strike capped a half in which Barton took 13 shots, including seven in the game's first 20 minutes.
Bluefield managed just five shots in the period, but four were on goal to test Moore. The attempts continued for both sides in the second half as well, with Barton taking 24 shots in regulation and Bluefield posting 14.
As a result, both keepers posted season-highs for saves, Moore recording 11 for Barton and Richardson posting 10 for the Rams. Two of Moore's saves came in the 62nd minute, when she deflected a Pattison shot then stopped her follow-up attempt as well.
Barton will return to Conference Carolinas action this weekend when it travels to Banner Elk, N.C., to take on Lees-McRae College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
