WILSON, N.C.-All the goals came in the second half Wednesday night as visiting Belmont Abbey College held off Barton College for a 2-1 Conference Carolinas women's soccer victory at the Barton Outdoor Athletic Complex.
Abbey improved to 2-3 overall in opening league play while Barton slipped to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in conference action.
Senior Alana Ryczek broke a 0-0 deadlock less than five minutes into the second half when she took a cross from freshman Laura Shelton and found the net. Abbey made it 2-0 in the 56th minute. Freshman Megan Nanney launched a free kick from the right wing that freshman Meghan Philip headed into the goal.
Barton struck for a goal in the 58th minute when freshman Emily Futral's free kick from the top of the box deflected off goalkeeper Hannah Kohls and was finished by charging freshman Lindsay Rembecki.
Rembecki's tally was her first collegiate goal.
Abbey dominated play in the first half, holding possession on its side of the pitch, but Barton's defense, led by sophomore keeper Carson Moore (eight saves) was up to the challenge. The Lady Bulldogs made some aggressive runs early in the second half before Abbey finally opened the scoring.
The Crusaders finished with a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal and a 17-5 advantage in overall shots. Megan Bowen (no saves) played first half in goal for Abbey and Kohls (two saves) was the netminder in the second half, improving her record to 2-3.
