Box Score GAFFNEY, S.C.-Senior Jamila Johnson led six Lady Bulldogs into double figures with 20 points as Barton College rolled to a 99-70 Conference Carolinas conquest of host Limestone College on Saturday evening in the Timken Center.
The Lady Bulldogs boast 11-2 overall and 7-0 league ledgers after scoring a season-high 99 points. The Saints stumble to 7-5 and 3-3. Barton – winners of 25 straight league games – entertains conference rival Queens University of Charlotte on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The Royals were the last league team to defeat the Lady Bulldogs back on January 7, 2010.
Barton scorched the nets all night with a season-best 63% (40-of-63) shooting performance including 8-of-12 accuracy by Johnson (Garner, N.C.). Sophomore Faith Hunter (Raleigh, N.C.) poured in a season-best 16 points; freshman Nyeshea Willie (Virginia Beach, Va.) bucketed 14; senior Kelsey Sill (Raleigh, N.C.) was a perfect 6-for-6 for 12 points; sophomore Janae Jackson (Fort Belvoir, Va.) canned 11; and sophomore Shante Neal (Spring Hope, N.C.) deposited 10.
Limestone stayed within striking distance in the first half by shooting 65.4% but Barton was able to pull out to a 55-43 advantage at halftime by firing at 72.7%. The Saints cooled off to 37.5% in the second half to finish at 52% for the game as the Bulldogs ran away to the 29-point blowout win.
Deadlocked at 24 midway through the first period, Barton took over with a 10-0 outburst that put the visitors ahead for the final 30 minutes. Johnson sparked the run with an old-fashion three-point play and Hunter scored five of the next seven points with a trey and a layup. BC led by double digits throughout the final frame.
Barton controlled the backboards by a sizable 36-21 margin. Sophomore Jolanda Mitchell (Raleigh, N.C.), who scored eight points, seized a game-high nine rebounds. Jackson and Willie each pulled down five boards.
Johnson handed out a game-high eight assists. The 5-foot-8 guard has dished out eight dimes in four of the Bulldogs last five games.
The Saints were paced by sophomore Maria Young's (Asheville, N.C.) game-high 23 points. Junior Kaileigh West (Jacksonville, Ill.) and sophomore Tia Williams (Dacula, Ga.) both added 12 points.
Limestone turned over the ball 18 times with Willie swiping four of the Bulldogs 10 steals. Barton committed a season-low 11 turnovers in league play.
