Barton College names Jeff May Head Baseball Coach

WILSON, N.C. – Barton College has named Jeff May its new Head Baseball Coach, school officials announced earlier today.

May comes to Barton after spending the past 13 years as an Assistant Coach at Belmont Abbey College (2014-26) in Belmont, N.C.   May was promoted to pitching coach in 2018 and worked in all aspects of the Crusaders program over the years.

During his tenure with the Crusaders, the squad earned six berths to the NCAA Division II regional tournament including one appearance in the Super Regional Championship and captured the 2025 Conference Carolinas Title.  This past year, Belmont Abbey finished 38-16 overall including a 26-7 mark in league play and qualified for the playoffs.

"I couldn't be more excited for the opportunity to lead this program," said May.  "It's an honor and a blessing.  Barton baseball will be built on faith, relationships, hard work and development.  Jean (wife) and myself are excited to be a part of the Barton family.  Let's get to work!  Go Bulldogs!"

Prior to Belmont Abbey, May served as a volunteer assistant at Lander under Kermit Smith in 2023.  May was a 2014 graduate of Lander University and earned all-conference, all-region and All-American honors as a three-year starting catcher for the Bearcats' baseball team.  May transferred to Lander after playing two seasons at the University of North Carolina (2009-10).

May also served as an Assistant Coach for the Wilmington Sharks of the Coastal Plain League.

"We are thrilled to add Jeff (May) to our team as Head Baseball Coach," said Ken Tyler, Barton Vice President and Director of Athletics.  "He has a championship pedigree coming from Belmont Abbey and clearly understands our enrollment-based model.  Jeff came highly recommended by everyone we spoke with, and his passion for teaching and coaching is contagious!  He will hit the ground running, and we look forward to the resurgence of Barton baseball under his leadership.  It's a great day to be a Bulldog!"
