NORMAN, Okla. – Four members of the Barton College men's golf team were named 2022-23 GCAA All-America Scholars. GCAA is the Golf Coaches Association of America.
The quartet for the Bulldogs earning this distinct honor includes sophomore
Daniel Adkins (Holly Springs, N.C.), junior
Kris Jackson (Greenville, N.C.), sophomore
Mitchell Soma (New Albany, Ohio) and junior
Harrison Wierse (Wilmington, N.C.).
Adkins was a 2022-23 First-Team All-Conference Carolinas selection and won the Spring Bulldog Clash in Pawleys Island, S.C., in February while Jackson earned Academic All-District honors in May.
Soma finished fourth at the league championship in April and was named to the All-Conference Carolinas Second Team. Meanwhile, Wierse took third overall at the 2023 Conference Carolinas Championship, was a first-team all-league selection and won the Barton Intercollegiate in Wilson, N.C., in March at the Wilson Country Club. In addition, Wierse was the league's men's golf scholar-athlete of the year.
All four players led the Bulldogs to the 2023 Conference Carolinas Championship – their first league title since 2009 – and a berth in the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional Championship at the Grande Oaks Golf Club in Davie, Fla. Barton was also ranked as high as No. 22 in NCAA Division II this year.
To be eligible for GCAA All-America Scholar nomination, an individual must be a sophomore, junior or senior both academically and athletically in NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA, or receiving their Associate's Degree and in their last year of athletic eligibility in the NJCAA.
In addition, they must participate in 50% of their team's competitive rounds, have a stroke average under 76.0 in NCAA Division I, under 78.0 in NCAA Division II, under 79.0 in NCAA Division III, under 78.0 in NAIA, and under 77.0 in NJCAA, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at their college or university.
