GREENVILLE, S.C. – Barton College's
Tanner Halvorson has been named the 2022-23 Herff Jones Conference Carolinas Male Athlete of the Year. Halvorson is the fourth Bulldog student-athlete to earn the yearly honor and the first since Anthony Atkinson in 2006-07.
Halvorson, a junior from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, had one of the best seasons in school history for the Bulldogs' baseball squad this past spring.
Halvorson finished with an 11-2 record in 2023 with a 1.71 earned run average and 79 strikeouts while being named the Conference Carolinas Pitcher of the Year. Halvorson set new program single-season marks in victories, ERA and complete games (10) while concluding the campaign on an 11-game winning streak.
At the plate as a designated hitter, Halvorson batted .339 with six home runs and 36 runs batted in while leading the team in runs scored (55), hits (63), doubles (20) and total bases (101). Halvorson also started all 50 contests for the Bulldogs.
Halvorson was also named a first-team NCAA Division II All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and earned second and third-team All-American accolades by both the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and the Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA), respectively.
Halvorson also led the Bulldogs to a 30-20 record on the season including a 20-10 mark in league play and a second-place finish in the conference regular season standings.
"
What an incredible honor for Tanner (Halvorson), his family, Barton Baseball and the entire Barton College community," said Barton Head Baseball Coach
Keith Gorman. "
Tanner embodies the true spirit of competition. He competed all year with an unwavering confidence and focus that resulted in one of the best performances by a dual player nationally. Not to mention he did this in the best baseball conference in the country."
"
Voted an All-American on the field, he was also an All-American off the field. He is loved in our community. Tanner was extremely coachable and did everything anyone asked of him. We appreciate Conference Carolinas selecting Tanner. They chose a ferocious competitor."
The Athlete of the Year Award (one male and one female each year) is the most outstanding student-athlete for the year in the league. Per Conference Carolinas Directors of Athletics vote, nominations will be accepted from member institutions to only include conference-sponsored sports and all nomination information, statistics and accomplishments are solely based on athletically-related criteria.
