In 2024, Keith Gorman wrapped up his fifth season as the head coach of Barton Baseball, steering the Bulldogs to unprecedented success.
Under his leadership, the team shattered the school record for most wins in a season and achieved the highest three-year and two-year win totals in the program’s history. The Bulldogs are the third program in which Gorman mentored that holds the single-season wins record!
The 2024 Bulldogs started the year 11-0 - the best start in program history - and also the longest winning streak in program history. Barton was ranked in the top ten in the NCAA D-II Southeast Region for all 15 weeks. Nationally, they climbed as high as No. 18 in the NCBWA poll and D2 Baseball had them as high as No. 9 after the sweep of Mount Olive.
The record-breaking 2024 season was driven by a formidable pitching staff. Nationally, the Bulldogs ranked 11th in strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.54), 13th in WHIP (1.35) and 19th in ERA (4.29).
In Conference Carolinas, the Bulldogs allowed the fewest walks and led the league in the fewest runs given up. Individually, Tanner Halvorson concluded his remarkable career with the top all-time ERA in Barton’s history, tied for second in career wins, and the No. 3 in complete games (13). In addition, Matt Rivers also made his mark - posting a 2.75 ERA in 2024 - which earned him the third spot for single-season ERA in program history.
On the offensive side in 2024, the Bulldogs boasted the second-best batting average in Conference Carolinas with a .319 mark. Additionally, their offense achieved the second-highest on-base percentage (.435) in the conference and recorded the fewest strikeouts.
The 2023 season was a special one for the Bulldogs as well. Gorman led the team to a second-place finish in the extremely difficult Conference Carolinas. The squad also compiled a record of 30-20 - its more victories in four years - with a top ten national strength of schedule. Under Gorman's tutelage, Halvorson was named the 2023 Conference Carolinas Pitcher of the Year and broke the school's NCAA-era single-season record for wins (11) and complete games (10).
Before Gorman took over as Bulldogs' mentor, he led Cumberland County (N.J.) College to the 2019 NJCAA Division III National Championship. For his efforts, Gorman was named the 2019 ABCA/Diamond National Coach of the Year for NJCAA Division III.
Gorman led the Dukes to a 47-5 record in 2019 and sported a career mark of 316-91 (.776) after eight seasons at the helm for CCC. The 2017 squad went 55-8 on the season, ranked No. 1 in the nation and finished third at the College World Series while the 2014 team (49-10) was the national runner-up. 55 wins by the 2017 team is an all-time New Jersey College Wins record.
Gorman, who was also Director of Athletics and Student Life at Cumberland County since 2013, was the NJCAA National Coach of the Year in 2019 and a two-time Region XIX (2017, 2019) and ABCA Regional (2014, 2017) Coach of the Year. In all, the Dukes won three regional and three league tournament titles. Gorman also coached six players who eventually landed professional contracts and 17 players who signed with NCAA Division I institutions. Gorman mentored five All-Americans, three region pitchers of the year and one region player of the year as well.
Gorman also worked at Holy Spirit (N.J.) High School for 10 years (2004-13) and led the baseball team to a 120-54-1 (.690) record over seven seasons. The prep squad won three conference championships and finished a school-best 25-5 in 2011. At the high school, Gorman also served as Assistant Principal of Athletics and Student Activities and Director of Athletics.
Gorman, a native of St. Joseph, Missouri, played collegiately at Kansas City (Kan.) CC and North Central (Mo.) College before earning his bachelor's degree from the University of Missouri and master's degree from LaSalle University. Gorman and his wife, Emily, are the proud parents of three children: Leanna, Ellee and Beau.
