FLORENCE, S.C. – The Barton men's tennis team (1-0) opened the 2020 season with a 4-2 victory over Bluefield State (0-1) Friday on the first day of the 2020 City of Florence Invitational at the Dr. Eddie Floyd Center.
Three players – sophomore James Kelly (Mazabuka, ZAMBIA) and freshmen Philip Nordberg (Mariefred, SWEDEN) and Matteo Savio (Malvern, AUSTRALIA) – notched wins at singles and doubles play in the triumph for Barton.
Nordberg and Kelly defeated Bluefield State's Luke Busse (Munich, GERMANY) and Daniel Shasteen (Gothenburg, SWEDEN) by a 6-2 score at third doubles while Nordberg earned a 6-0, 3-6 and 6-2 triumph over Mohamed Belcora (Meknes, MOROCCO) at No. 2 singles to seal the win for the Bulldogs.
Barton advances in the winner's bracket to face Francis Marion while Bluefield State plays Newberry. Both matches start on Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m.
