Box Score WILSON, N.C. – The Barton baseball team (7-5) hit four consecutive home runs in the fifth inning to power its way past UNC Pembroke (7-5), 8-7, Tuesday afternoon at Nixon Field.
Trailing by a 4-2 score in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Bulldogs took control with four straight round-trippers including the game-tying, two-run shot by senior outfielder Trevor Edior (Los Angeles, Calif.) and the game-winning shot by senior catcher Brayden Olson (Spokane, Wash.).
Barton junior first baseman Colby Warren (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) and sophomore pinch hitter Mike Mayer (Morehead City, N.C.) rounded out the home run streak in the frame while Olson added another round-tripper in the sixth inning and finished with three runs batted in.
For UNC Pembroke, Ethan Baucom (Rockingham, N.C.) hit a solo home run in the ninth frame to cut the lead to one run but Warren was able to close out the contest for his second save of the year. Barton junior Zach Bagley (Fayetteville, N.C.) (1-0) earned the win in relief while the Braves' Jake Mayhew (Clemmons, N.C.) (0-1) was tagged with the setback.
Barton opens Conference Carolinas play on Friday at 2:30 p.m., at Nixon Field against No. 8 North Greenville while UNC Pembroke hosts USC Aiken on Friday beginning at 4:00 p.m.
