Box Score 2 WILSON, N.C. – The Barton baseball team (6-5) moved back over .500 on the year with a doubleheader sweep of Mercy (1-3), 15-5 and 9-6, Sunday afternoon at Nixon Field.
Game One – Barton 15, Mercy 5 (seven innings)
The Bulldogs broke the game open with a five-run third inning and a seven-run sixth frame in the easy victory. Freshman shortstop Stancil Bowles (Beulaville, N.C.) and junior third baseman Tyler Robinson (Beaver Falls, N.C.) both had two-run singles in the third frame as Barton finished with 15 hits in the victory.
Bowles finished with three runs batted in while senior Colby Shimmel (Windsor, Pa.) (1-1) earned the win after allowing just two earned runs over six innings of work and striking out seven batters. Mercy's John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y.) hit a two-run home run but Anthony Burgio (White Plains, N.Y.) (0-1) suffered the loss.
Game Two – Barton 9, Mercy 6
Robinson finished with three hits and four runs batted in as the Bulldogs rallied from a 3-0 deficit to sweep the doubleheader. Robinson broke a four-all tie with the game-winning, two-run single in the bottom of the third inning.
Junior first baseman Colby Warren (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) hit a solo home run in the sixth frame and pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save for the Bulldogs. Mercy's Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y.) hit two home runs with four RBI to lead the Mavericks offensively.
On the mound, Barton junior Jared Davis (Poquoson, Va.) improved to 3-0 after earning the win in relief while Mercy's Manuel Sanchez (Ossining, N.Y.) (0-1) was tagged with the loss.
Barton remains at home to take on UNC Pembroke on Tuesday afternoon beginning at 2:00 p.m., while Mercy takes on Newberry Tuesday on the road in Newberry, S.C., at 6:00 p.m.
