Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton baseball team (4-5) split a home doubleheader with Mercy (1-1) Saturday afternoon at Nixon Field.  The Bulldogs won the first game in seven innings, 4-0, while the Mavericks salvaged the split with an 8-6 victory in the nightcap.

Game One – Barton 4, Mercy 0 (seven innings)
Barton freshman Gentry Fortuno (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) (2-0) pitched another stellar game, a five-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts to lead the Bulldogs to the win.  Fortuno has a 0.39 earned run average with 37 strikeouts in 23 innings pitched so far this year.

The Bulldogs scored all four of their runs in the fifth frame including the game-winning, RBI single from senior outfielder Trevor Edior (Los Angeles, Calif.).  Sophomore designated hitter Mike Mayer (Morehead City, N.C.) added a two-run single in the inning for Barton.  Mercy's James Jakuba (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) (0-1) was tagged with the loss.

Game Two – Mercy 8, Barton 6
The Mavericks took advantage of four Bulldogs' errors which led to five unearned runs and broke a four-all tie with a four-run seventh inning to split the doubleheader.  Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y.) came through with the game-winning, RBI single in the frame.

Miquel Ortiz Sanchez (Bronx, N.Y.) led Mercy with two hits and two runs batted in while Jack Kelly (Scranton, Pa.) (1-0) was credited with the victory and Andrew Hernandez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) picked up the save after retiring the final four batters.

For Barton, junior first baseman Colby Warren (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) and senior catcher Brayden Olson (Spokane, Wash.) both finished with four hits and the Bulldogs held a 16-12 advantage in hits despite the loss.  The Bulldogs, however, left 12 men on base while junior Alex Hart (Raleigh, N.C.) (0-2) took the loss.

The two teams will wrap up the four-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 11:00 a.m.
