Box Score TAMPA, Fla. – The Barton baseball team (1-0) opened the 2020 campaign under first-year mentor Keith Gorman with a bang with a 1-0 shutout over fifth-ranked Catawba (0-1) Friday afternoon at George M. Steinbrenner Stadium.
Barton freshman Gentry Fortuno (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) (1-0) was the star of the game, throwing a four-hit shutout to go along with 16 strikeouts.
The Bulldogs scored the lone run of the contest in the top of the third inning when freshman Stancil Bowles (Beulaville, N.C.) drove in senior outfielder Christian Murua (Sacramento, Calif.) with an RBI single. Catawba's Greg Brown (Lexington, N.C.) (0-1) suffered the loss despite allowing one unearned run over six innings with eight strikeouts.
Barton continues its weekend series in Florida on Saturday when the Bulldogs face Saint Leo while Catawba takes on Columbus State. First pitch for both games are slated for Noon.
