Erskine baseball takes advantage of lapses to beat Barton, 8-5

Box Score

WILSON, N.C. – The Erskine baseball team (21-16, 10-7) took advantage of several Barton (23-16, 11-8) miscues to down the Bulldogs by an 8-5 score Friday evening in a Conference Carolinas game at Fleming Stadium.

The Flying Fleet's Nick Vella (Bayside, N.Y.) finished with two hits and two runs batted in while Erskine took advantage of five Barton errors which led to six unearned runs in the victory.  Cory Everett (Wilmington, N.C.) broke a four-all tie with the game-winning, RBI single in the sixth inning for the visitors.

For Barton, senior third baseman Gatlin Pate (Grays Creek, N.C.) hit a solo home run – his team-tying fifth round-tripper of the season – while freshman outfielder Jacob Marcos (Miami, Fla.) scored twice in the losing effort.

On the mound, Erskine's Zack Bowers (Lugoff, S.C.) improved to 4-1 on the year after earning the victory while Zach Farmer (Waxhaw, N.C.) pitched the final three innings for his first save of the season.  Barton senior Chase Long (Wilson, N.C.) (1-1) was tagged with the loss.

The two teams will wrap up the Conference Carolinas weekend series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at Noon at Nixon Field.
