Box Score SALISBURY, N.C. – The Barton baseball team (23-15) suffered a 12-2 setback to No. 4 Catawba (31-8) Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference, regional contest at Newman Park.
The Indians' Greg Brown (Lexington, N.C.) improved to 4-1 on the year after taking a no-hitter into the eighth inning and allowing just one run to go along with 11 strikeouts. Hunter Shepherd (Salisbury, N.C.) and Jackson Raper (Concord, N.C.) both hit two-run home runs and finished with three runs batted in for Catawba, who improved to 15-2 in its last 17 games.
Barton junior outfielder Noah Almond (Raleigh, N.C.) hit a solo home run in the top of the eighth to break up Brown's no-hitter while freshman outfielder Jacob Marcos (Miami, Fla.) crossed the plate in the ninth in the losing effort. Almond is tied for the team lead in round-trippers with five.
On the mound, freshman Connor Patterson (Randleman, N.C.) fell to 1-2 after being tagged with the loss for the Bulldogs. Catawba was looking to avenge a 5-2 setback to Barton on Tuesday, February 26, at Nixon Field.
Barton looks to bounce back on Friday when the Bulldogs host Erskine in a Conference Carolinas contest on Friday at 2:30 p.m., while Catawba hosts Queens on Friday evening beginning at 6:00 p.m.
