Box Score MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Barton baseball team (16-8, 4-3) scored one of its biggest upsets in recent memory with an 8-5 triumph over fourth-ranked Mount Olive (13-3, 5-1) Friday afternoon at Scarborough Field in a Conference Carolinas weekend series opener.
The Bulldogs – 6-1 in their last seven games – broke a one-all tie with a four-run fifth inning to take the lead for good. Barton senior designated hitter Juan Martinez (Weston, Fla.) hit a solo home run in the eighth inning and finished with two hits and three runs batted in to lead the Bulldogs' offensively.
Barton junior Colby Shimmel (Windsor, Pa.) improved to 3-1 on the year after allowing just one run in five innings of work in addition to six strikeouts while junior Fredrick May (Folsom, Calif.) pitched the eighth and ninth innings for his second save of the year. Senior second baseman Hunter Pearre (Poolesville, Md.) added two sacrifice flies as the Bulldogs snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Trojans.
Mount Olive's J.T. Stone (Fayetteville, N.C.) hit a two-run home run and finished with three runs batted in despite the loss. Reed Parris (Kinston, N.C.) (5-1) also suffered his first setback of the year. A pair of Trojan errors led to four unearned runs as well. Mount Olive also saw its six-game winning streak come to an end.
The two teams will wrap up the weekend series with a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday. In the latest NCBWA NCAA Division II Southeast Regional rankings, the Trojans have the top spot while the Bulldogs are ranked No. 10.
