WILSON, N.C. – The Barton men's tennis team (9-7, 4-1) won its fourth straight match – all against Conference Carolinas opponents – with a 5-2 victory over Emmanuel (Ga.) (4-9, 3-2) Friday afternoon at the Bulldogs complex.
Two players for Barton – sophomore Hugh Ryder (Dartmouth, ENGLAND) and freshman James Kelly (Mazubuka, ZAMBIA) – won at both singles and doubles to lead the Bulldogs to the win. Both players helped give the Bulldogs the doubles' point heading into the singles' competition.
Ryder teamed up with junior Rory Gaydon (Darlington, ENGLAND) at second doubles to win over Emmanuel's Lucas Hideo Sasaki (Sao Jose dos Campos, BRAZIL) and Jorge Canadas (Madrid, SPAIN) by a 6-4 score. Meanwhile, Kelly and sophomore Alessandro Gerbino (Borlange, SWEDEN) were victorious at No. 3 doubles: a 6-1 triumph against the Lions' Kornel Kimagzweski (Kolobrzeg, POLAND) and Juan Camilo Burgos Torres (Bogata, COLOMBIA).
Kelly made it four victories in a row at fifth singles with his 7-5, 6-4 win over Canadas while Barton sophomore Oscar Marmestedt (Akersberga, SWEDEN) won his third straight singles match at No. 3.
The Barton men's tennis team next travels to Gaffney, S.C., to take on Limestone on Saturday, April 6, at 1:00 p.m., while Emmanuel (Ga.) takes on Chowan on Saturday at 11:00 a.m., in Murfreesboro, N.C.
