Barton women's lacrosse wins thriller, 14-13 over Ohio Valley with last-second goal

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's lacrosse team (5-2) pulled out a 14-13 victory over Ohio Valley (2-1) on a last-second goal by sophomore attacker Kayli Ashenfelter (Stewartstown, Pa.) Thursday afternoon at Electric Supply Company Field, the Bulldogs' new synthetic turf field.

Ashenfelter – who finished with a game-high seven goals and three assists for 10 total points – found the back of the net with one second left on a free position shot.  Ashenfelter leads the team in total goals (25) and total points (29).

Barton sophomore attacker Angelina Scarpa (Hicksville, N.Y.) added four goals and three assists as the Bulldogs were able to withstand a second-half rally from the Scots and improved to 3-0 at home this year.

Ohio Valley – who rallied from a 9-5 halftime deficit to tie the score at 13 late in the contest – was paced by Taylor Baker's (Indianapolis, Ind.) six scores and Emily Prentice (Melbourne, AUSTRALIA) with seven points (two goals and five assists) despite the loss. 

The Scots also fell despite holding a 34-24 advantage in shots taken.  In goal, sophomore Katherine Mattena (Salt Lake City, Utah) earned the win for the Bulldogs after making 15 saves while Ohio Valley's Cheyenne Jess (Stratford, N.J.) suffered the loss after making six stops.

Barton remains at home to host No. 12 Limestone in a Conference Carolinas game on Saturday beginning at Noon while Ohio Valley takes on West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday at 1:00 p.m., in Buckhannon, W.Va.
