Box Score HICKORY, N.C. – The Barton College baseball team (1-3) picked up its first win of the 2019 campaign with a 9-4 triumph over Lenoir-Rhyne (1-3) Wednesday evening at Bears Field.
Barton sophomore first baseman Colby Warren (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) hit two home runs and drove in four runs as the Bulldogs raced to a 9-1 advantage on their way to the victory.
The Bulldogs broke a scoreless tie with a three-run third inning highlighted by a two-run home run from Warren then took control with a four-run fourth frame. Sophomore third baseman Gatlin Pate (Grays Creek, N.C.) had a run-scoring double in both innings for Barton, whose six of nine hits were for extra bases.
On the mound, freshman Donovan Waitman (Valencia, Calif.) (1-0) earned the win in relief for freshman Connor Patterson (Randleman, N.C.). Patterson allowed just one run while pitching into the fifth inning in addition to five strikeouts.
For Lenoir-Rhyne, E.J. Ranel (Dacula, Ga.) hit a solo home run in the ninth inning while Kain Kiser (Pilot Mountain, N.C.) (0-1) was tagged with the loss.
Barton hosts Nyack (N.Y.) in its home opener on Saturday as part of a doubleheader beginning at Noon at Nixon Field. Lenoir-Rhyne, meanwhile, hosts Mount Olive in a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m.
