Barton baseball suffers 5-1 road setback to Flagler in weekend rubber match

Box Score

SAINT AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Barton baseball team (0-3) fell to Flagler (3-0) by a 5-1 score in the third and final game of a season-opening weekend series at Drysdale Field on Sunday.

The Saints' Robert Girgis (Jacksonville, Fla.) (1-0) allowed just one run in five innings of work to go along with eight strikeouts in picking up the win as Flagler completed the three-game sweep of Barton.  Five pitchers held Barton to a total of four hits on the afternoon.

Barton scored the first run of the contest in the opening frame when senior first baseman Hunter Pearre (Poolesville, Md.) drove in freshman outfielder Jacob Marcos (Miami, Fla.) on an RBI single but the visitors were held off the board the rest of the way.  Marcos finished with two hits to lead the Bulldogs.

Holding a 2-1 advantage in the bottom of the sixth inning, Flagler gave itself some breathing room thanks to a two-run double from pinch hitter Connor Laspina (Mahwah, N.J.).

Barton sophomore Colby Warren (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) (0-1) was tagged with the loss despite allowing just two runs in five innings of work.

Barton looks to bounce back on Wednesday against Lenoir-Rhyne on the road in Hickory, N.C., at Bears Field beginning at 5:00 p.m.  Flagler, meanwhile, plays at Valdosta State in Valdosta, Ga., on Tuesday beginning at 5:00 p.m.
