Barton men's cross country takes third place at the 2018 Monarch Classic

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Barton men's cross country team finished third out of nine schools at the 2018 Monarch Cross Country Classic Saturday morning on the campus of Methodist University.

The Bulldogs totaled 83 points, while the Monarchs took home team honors with 35 points. Barton was led by freshman Deshawn Owens and redshirt freshman Nicholas Leeks.  

Owens ran a 32:42.98 on the 8K course to take fifth place for BC. Owens was also the Bulldogs' top runner for the second straight week. Meanwhile, Leek placed sixth overall after clocking a 32:52.20.

Sophomore Greg Gibbs (Newark, N.J.), took 16th overall with a time of 36:15.01. Also competing for the Bulldogs were freshman Timothy DeVore (Loganville, Ga.) and junior Leslie Jones (Spring Hope, N.C.) as they finished 22nd (38:40.67) and 40th (42:19.98), respectively.   

Saint Augustine's Baron Freeman placed first overall with a time of 30:27.25.

The Bulldogs will next compete on Friday, Sept. 28, at the Queens City Invitational. The meet will take place in Charlotte, N.C. at McAlpine Creek Park starting at 4:30 p.m.
