WILSON, N.C. –  The Hawks of Chowan University scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to steal a 7-6 win away from the Barton baseball team on Tuesday afternoon at Nixon Field.

Chowan (20-19) opened the game with an unearned run in the first inning, taking advantage of two early errors by the Bulldogs. Barton went on to commit five miscues in the game as the Hawks had just four earned runs in the contest.

Barton (25-17) responded with a four-run second inning to take an early 4-1 lead. Freshman Carter Brogden brought BC's first run across the plate with an RBI double before fellow freshman Chase Riker drew a bases-loaded walk to score another run. An RBI single from senior Andrew Webster brought the final two runs of the inning home to extend the Bulldog lead to three runs.

Both teams went quietly in the third inning, as Chowan added a single run in the fourth and another in the sixth to cut the deficit to one run.

In the bottom of the sixth, senior Blake Spangenberg drove a run in with a ground out to first, while fellow senior Tyler Garrett singled up the middle to bring a run home and move the Barton lead to 6-3.

However, in the top of the ninth inning, Chowan scored on another BC error to begin a four-run rally.

The Hawks' Zack Cooper sent a two-run home run off of the scoreboard to tie the game at 6-all before Tyler Jones reached on a fielder's choice, driving home a runner from third to take the lead. Barton went down in order to end the game, giving Cooper (4-0) the victory on the mound.

Sophomore Jordan Ramos started the game on the mound for Barton and did not factor in the decision after giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits with four walks and three strikeouts over six innings of work.

Freshman right-hander Landry Moore (0-3) came on in relief and allowed four runs (one earned) on four hits with a strikeout to take the loss, while senior Justin Evans allowed just one hit with a walk and a strikeout in an inning out of the bullpen.

Webster was 1-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and a walk, while Garrett and sophomore Troy Maslowski were each 2-for-4 on offense.

Barton turns its focus back to Conference Carolinas play as it welcomes league foe Southern Wesleyan University to Wilson for a three-game series this weekend.
