MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Barton College baseball team couldn't recover from last night's sour ending, dropping a pair of games to No. 14 University of Mount Olive 3-0 and 9-2 on Saturday at Scarborough Field.
The Bulldogs fell to 14-7 overall with a 1-5 record in Conference Carolinas play as the Trojans record moved to 15-4 with a perfect 6-0 mark in the league.
Game One: No. 14 Mount Olive 3, Barton 0 (Seven inn.)
The first game of the afternoon was an old-fashioned pitcher's dual between Barton's Kerry Walker and Mount Olive's Austin Hutchison as the two combined to allow just 13 total hits.
Mount Olive score a run in the first, second and fifth innings to give Hutchison his fifth win of the season, as Barton was just 1-for-10 at the plate with runners on base.
Walker (4-2) suffered the tough loss after allowing three runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts in his second complete game of the year.
Only five Bulldogs registered a hit in the contest, led by senior Andrew Webster who was 2-for-3 at the plate.
Game Two: No. 14 Mount Olive 9, Barton 2
The series finale saw a bit more offense from the two sides, however, it was Mount Olive who did most of the scoring thanks in large part to four Barton errors in the field.
Mount Olive struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning and extended its advantage to 7-0 with five runs in the second.
Junior transfer Christian Dix put Barton on the board with an RBI single in the fourth before UMO's Drew Ellis hit his second home run of the weekend in the bottom half. The Trojans' final run came in bottom of the sixth as senior Calvin Hawke drove in Barton's last run with an RBI single in the eighth inning of play.
Hawke was 2-for-4 with an RBI in the game, as five other Bulldogs recorded one hit each including doubles from Webster and fellow senior Tyler Garrett.
Sophomore Dylan Ward (3-1) was tagged for right runs (seven earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts for his first loss of the season.
Fellow sophomore Ryan Pifer allowed a run and walked to batters in an inning of relief while redshirt-junior Josh Mims threw a perfect seventh inning in his fourth appearance of the year. Junior Andrew Davis threw the final inning for BC, allowing one hit and striking out a batter.
Barton will have a week to prepare for it next opponent, conference foe Belmont Abbey College, who comes to Wilson for a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 10 at Nixon Field.
