PEMBROKE, N.C. – A midweek, non-conference matchup was a one-sided affair as the Barton baseball team suffered a 26-3 loss at the hands of Peach Belt Conference member UNC Pembroke on Tuesday night at Sammy Cox Field.
Barton (21-13), the highest scoring team in NCAA Division II, produced its three runs on just nine hits. In contrast, the Braves (21-10) scored a season-high 26 runs on 26 hits, including 10 extra-base hits.
UNC Pembroke scored early and often in the contest, totaling 14 runs over the first four innings of play, highlighted by a seven-run third inning.
The Bulldogs finally got on the board with three runs in the top of the fifth inning, two of which came on an RBI single from sophomore Ricks Dearing. Pembroke tallied 12 more runs over the game's final five innings to secure a home victory.
Junior left-hander Andrew Davis (2-3) suffered the loss on the mound after allowing seven runs (five earned) on six hits with three walks over 2.1 innings of work. Five relievers combined to throw the 5.2 innings out of the bullpen, allowing 19 total runs.
Dearing led the BC offense, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and two RBI, while fellow sophomore Troy Maslowski and senior Calvin Hawke had two hits each.
Barton returns to Conference Carolinas play on Friday when it hosts Pfeiffer University in the first game of a three-game series at 2:30 p.m. in Wilson.
