WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College baseball team set a school record for runs in a single game in Sunday's 34-4 rout of visiting Salem International in the series finale at Nixon Field.
The Bulldogs (5-0) scored 34 runs in the game on 29 hits while having nine batters reach base via a walk and six others being hit by a pitch. The run total is the most scored by a Barton team since BC scored 24 runs during the 2006 season.
Barton got the scoring started early with RBI singles from senior Andrew Webster and sophomore Gatlin Pate in the first inning of play.
After a scoreless second inning, the BC offense erupted for 10 runs on just seven hits in the third. Three batters were walked in the inning as two others were hit by a pitch.
Junior transfer Christian Dix and sophomore Ricks Dearing each had RBI doubles in the inning, while Webster ended the scoring with a three-run home run to left field as Barton led 12-0 over the Tigers after just three innings.
BC scored three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings of action as seniors Jacob Willis and Tyler Garrett homered in the fifth to move Barton's advantage to an 18-0 lead. Willis, playing in his 100th career game, was 2-for-3 at the plate and was twice hit by a pitch while scoring three runs and driving in two more.
The Tigers (0-3) finally got on the scoreboard with two runs in the sixth inning before Barton scored nine more , including Webster's second long ball of the game, in the bottom half of the frame.
Seniors Chris Davis and Blake Spangenberg each had RBI doubles in the eighth inning, while freshmen Hayden Amodeo and Chase Riker each had an RBI single in the seven-run inning to conclude the scoring for Barton.
An RBI double by Salem International's Sean Deviney scored two more runs for the Tigers, but sophomore Brent Godfrey struck out the final batter to end the game.
Sophomore Dylan Ward (1-0) picked up his first win of the season after pitching 5.2 innings on the mound. The right-hander allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits with seven strikeouts.
Junior Andrew Davis and sophomore Jordan Ramos and Troy Maslowski combined for 2.1 innings of hitless relief, while Godfrey pitched the final inning of the game and allowed two runs on three hits with two strikeouts.
Barton will have a week to prepare for its next opponent, Glenville State College. The Bulldogs and Pioneers begin a four-game series on Saturday, February 11 with a doubleheader, followed by a twin bill on Sunday, February 12 at Nixon Field.
