WILSON, N.C. – Junior right-hander Trent Fennell struck out a career-high 13 batters in game one of Barton's doubleheader sweep of visiting Salem International University on Saturday at Nixon Field.
BC (4-0) took game one by a score of 5-3 before the offense came alive in a 14-2 game two win.
Game One: Barton 5, Salem International 3 (Seven inn.)
The first game of the afternoon was controlled early and often by Fennell (1-0) who carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and struck out 10 of the first 12 batters he faced.
The Dunn, N.C. more than doubled his career-high strike out total and allowed just two unearned runs on three hits over 6.1 innings of work.
Junior Hunter Pearre brought Barton's first run across the plate with an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning before sophomore Troy Maslowski added an RBI single of his own in the fourth.
The Tigers' first run came via a Barton defensive error in the top of the fifth inning as BC responded with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single from senior Calvin Hawke.
A Pearre double in the sixth inning scored Maslowski and senior Tyler Garrett, while Salem International scored two runs in the top of the seventh on consecutive RBI singles.
Sophomore reliever Ryan Pifer forced SIU's Donato Gallano to fly out to right field to end the game and give Barton the victory. Pearre recorded three RBIs in the contest, while Maslowski and junior transfer Christian Dix each had two hits.
Game Two: Barton 14, Salem International 2 (Seven inn.)
In the second game of the day, Barton scored at least one run in five of the six innings of play including a five-run sixth inning that all but sealed the win for the Bulldogs.
After the Tigers scored the game's first run in the top of the first inning, sophomore Gatlin Pate launched a three-run shot over the left field fence in the bottom half to put BC up 3-1.
A Ricks Dearing RBI single in the second followed by a two-RBI double from Andrew Webster and an RBI triple from Hawke in the fourth put Barton ahead 7-1 and provided starter Kerry Walker (2-0) with all the run support he would need.
Walker, a senior from Durham, N.C., went six full innings to pick up his second consecutive win to start the season. The right-hander allowed just one run on four hits while striking out four batters. Senior Justin Evans pitched the final inning of relief, allowing one run on one hit with a strikeout and a walk.
Barton scored twice in the fifth inning before the offense erupted for five runs on seven hits in the sixth inning of play.
The first two batters of the inning reached base and later scored on back-to-back RBI hits from seniors Chris Davis and Shawn Montren. Fellow senior Blake Spangenberg recorded two RBI with a pinch hit double as the scoring stopped with an RBI single by Pearre to right field.
Ten different Bulldogs registered a hit in the game, led by Hawke's 4-for-4 performance. Pearre was 3-for-4 in the game with two RBI and two runs scored, while Dearing and Montren each finished 2-for-3 at the plate.
Barton and Salem International conclude their three-game series tomorrow with a single game beginning at Noon in Wilson.
