MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Behind a team hitting percentage of .304, the Barton women's volleyball team shutout rival Mount Olive 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-19) on the road in Kornegay Arena.
Sophomore Hayley Marshburn led the offensive charge for Barton, recording a match-high 18 kills behind a .421 hitting percentage, the highest mark of her young career. Fellow sophomore Allie Cullens followed with six kills and a .444 hitting percentage, while senior Kaitlyn Micol hit .300 with nine kills.
The Lady Bulldogs, who improved to 7-7 overall and 4-1 in Conference Carolinas play with the win, won the first set easily after forcing Mount Olive to hit in the negative at -.111 to take the early lead.
Barton followed with another 25-12 win in the second set, hitting .429 as a unit. BC opened the second frame on a 9-1 run and never looked back, taking a 2-0 lead after a kill from Cullens.
In the third set, Barton once again took an early lead with a 6-2 edge. However, the Trojans responded with an 8-2 run to take a 10-8 lead over the visiting team.
The two sides played to four ties until consecutive kills by Micol, Mariana Kedzia and Courtney Wiseman put the Lady Bulldogs on top for good and led to a straight-set victory.
Sophomore setter Angelica Acevedo led all players with 35 assists and narrowly missed a double-double with nine digs, while redshirt-sophomore Riley Bane registered a match-high 15 digs on defense.
Barton concludes its five-game road trip this weekend with a matchup against Limestone College on Friday in Gaffney, S.C., followed by a Saturday afternoon contest with Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C.
