WILSON, N.C. – Barton's women's volleyball team moved its current win streak to five games after a 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-19) victory over Erskine College on Saturday afternoon in Wilson Gym.
The Lady Bulldogs (5-6, 2-0) won once again behind a strong defensive effort, totaling a season-high 10 blocks and holding the defending Conference Carolinas champions to a .057 hitting percentage. In contrast, Barton hit .245 as a team and committed just 11 attack errors.
Junior Courtney Wiseman led the defense with seven block assists, as senior Kaitlyn Micol followed with five block assists of her own.
Micol also had nine kills and a .318 hitting percentage, while sophomore Hayley Marshburn led all players with 12 kills. Senior Mariana Kedzia and redshirt-sophomore Riley Bane had 10 and 11 digs, respectively, on defense as sophomore Angelica Acevedo totaled 28 assists.
The first set of the day was controlled early by the Fleet (4-6, 1-1) who got out to a 4-0 lead, extending the edge to a 20-14 lead after a Kirsten Kaiser kill. However, the Lady Bulldogs responded with an 8-2 run to tie the set at 22-all. Barton completed the comeback by scoring the final three points of the frame, using back-to-back blocks to seal the win.
Barton rode its momentum into the second set of play, leading by as many as 12 points en route to a 25-16 win. The Lady Bulldogs got behind early in the third set but eventually took the lead at 14-11. BC never trailed again, ending the match on a block by Marshburn and Wiseman.
The Lady Bulldogs begin a five-game road trip on Friday, Sept. 23 when the team travels to Belmont, N.C. for a 7 p.m. match against the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey College.
