BURLINGTON, N.C. – In a game that featured a 17-hour weather delay and took parts of two days to complete, the No. 5 seed Barton College upset No. 2 seed North Greenville University 4-2 in the team's first game of the Conference Carolinas Tournament.
After two scoreless innings of play, Barton got on the scored first with an RBI single from junior Andrew Webster in the third inning to take an early lead.
Senior Ben Williams led off the fourth inning with a solo home run to right field, his third long ball in the last two games. Junior Tyler Garrett followed with a two-out double that scored two runs and put the Bulldogs ahead 4-0.
The two teams both went scoreless in the fifth inning before weather began to pay a factor. Lightning and rain filled the skies as the game was suspended in the top of the sixth inning with one out and a runner on with Barton at the plate.
Play resumed on Friday morning at 10 a.m. with just three innings left to go. North Greenville was able to push one run across in the seventh inning and another in the ninth to make the final score 4-2 in favor of BC.
Barton starter Dylan Ward (9-2) picked up the win after allowing just three hits over five innings of work with four strikeouts. Freshman Blake Helms finished the final four innings, allowing two runs on five hits with a strikeout to earn his second save of the season.
Garrett was 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and two RBI, while Williams was 2-for-4 with a home run. Junior Calvin Hawke turned in a 2-for-3 performance as seven members of the Barton lineup got a hit.
The Bulldogs will face No. 4 seed University of Mount Olive in their next game tonight at Burlington Stadium.
