MISENHEIMER, N.C. – The Barton baseball team won game one of a Saturday doubleheader 3-2 over Pfeiffer University before falling 8-2 in the second game at Joe Ferebee Field.
With the split, Barton's record moved to 29-18 overall and 14-12 in Conference Carolinas play, while Pfeiffer is now 20-28 with a 12-14 league record.
Game One: Barton 3, Pfeiffer 2
The Bulldogs once again received a quality start on the mound from ace Dylan Ward (8-2) who picked up the victory after allowing just one run on nine hits with four strikeouts over eight innings of work.
After five scoreless innings of play, freshman Gatlin Pate hit a double to right center that scored two runs and put BC ahead 2-0 in the sixth inning.
Pfeiffer responded with a run of its own in the seventh inning before junior Andrew Webster answered with a solo home run in the top of the eighth. The home run was Webster's 10th of the season and 20th of his career.
The Falcons took advantage of a Barton throwing error to score in the bottom of the ninth but left a runner stranded at second to close out the game.
Freshman Ryan Pifer pitched 2/3 of an inning in relief for Barton and allowed one unearned run, while sophomore Andrew Davis earned his first career save after getting the final out of the contest.
Webster was 2-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored in the first game, including the solo home run. Pate was also 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, as junior Tyler Garrett finished 3-for-4 with a walk from the leadoff spot.
Game Two: Pfeiffer 8, Barton 2 (Seven inn.)
Pfeiffer starter Ethan Greene went the distance in the second game of the twin bill, allowing two runs on six hits with eight strikeouts in Pfeiffer's six-run victory.
The Falcons got on the scoreboard early with a two-run home run in the first inning, scoring twice more in the second to build a 4-0 lead.
Barton scored its only runs of the game in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly from junior Calvin Hawke and an RBI single from Webster to cut the Pfeiffer lead to 4-2.
However, Pfeiffer scored four runs on five hits in the sixth to extend its lead to 8-2 as the BC offense went down in order to end the seventh and final inning.
Sophomore Trent Fennell (4-6) suffered his third loss in the last four game after giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits with two walks in 1.2 innings on the mound.
Freshman Blake Helms allowed four runs on five hits with a strikeout over 3.2 innings of relief, while Davis allowed just one hit over the final 2/3 of an inning.
Six different Bulldogs had a hit in game two, including a double from Garrett, while Hawke and Webster registered the team's only RBIs.
Barton and Pfeiffer each conclude the series and the regular season with a single game tomorrow at 1 p.m.
