CENTRAL, S.C. – Barton College junior Tyler Garrett became the program's all-time leader in stolen bases during Friday's 9-2 victory over Southern Wesleyan University at Dr. Connor Field.
Garrett stole second base in the first inning to tie the record and later became the all-time leader with his 55th career stolen base in the fifth inning of play. He now has 23 stolen bases this season and needs just four more to break the single season record of 26 set by KenRon Bradford during the 1996-97 season.
Barton (18-10, 8-5) took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning when Garrett scored from second on a throwing error by the shortstop before freshman Gatlin Pate drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
The Bulldogs added to their lead with two runs in the fifth inning on an RBI single from Garrett and a sacrifice fly from junior Andrew Webster before scoring four more runs on four hits in the sixth inning.
Senior Ben Youngblood hit a bases-loaded triple to left center to bring three runs home before Garrett recorded his second RBI of the game with a double to center field as BC led 8-0 with just three innings to play.
Sophomore pitcher Dylan Ward (5-2) had his no-hit effort broken up in the bottom of the sixth on a leadoff single from Just Brew to right field. Southern Wesleyan (10-19, 2-11) scored one run on two hits in the inning.
BC used an RBI single from junior Calvin Hawke in the eighth inning to add to its lead before the Warriors scored their final run in the bottom of the inning for 9-2 score.
Ward earned his fifth win of the season after allowing just one run on two hits over seven innings with two strikeouts. Junior Justin Evans allowed one run on one hits with a strikeout in an inning relief, while sophomore Andrew Davis struck out all three batters in the ninth to seal the BC victory.
Each Barton starter recorded a hit in the contest, including two hits apiece from Garrett, Youngblood, Ben Williams and Charlie Vaughan.
Barton and Southern Wesleyan conclude the three-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m.
