WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College baseball team got back to its winning ways with a 7-3 victory over Emmanuel College on Friday afternoon at Nixon Field.
Barton improved its record to 15-6 overall and 5-2 in league play with the win while Emmanuel fell to 2-21 on the season with a 1-9 mark in conference.
Emmanuel's Hanon Price led off the second inning with a double and advanced to third on a pass ball before scoring on an RBI single from Parker Runnels to take a 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs tied the game at 1-1 with a solo home run from redshirt-junior Chris Davis, his first of the season, in the fourth inning.
BC took the lead in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs on three hits with an Emmanuel fielding error. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with one out when junior Andrew Webster laced a double down the left field line to bring everyone across the plate and put the home team ahead 5-1 after five innings.
The Lions scored on a wild pitch in the sixth before Barton scored two more in the bottom of the inning. An RBI double from junior Tyler Garret and an RBI single from sophomore Hunter Pearre put BC up 7-2 over Emmanuel. EC added one more in the seventh on a sacrifice fly to conclude the scoring.
Sophomore Dylan Ward (4-1) earned the win after allowing three runs (two earned) on 11 hits with six strikeouts and just two walks. Freshman Ryan Pifer pitched a scoreless ninth inning in his sixth appearance of the season.
Eight Bulldogs got a hit in the game, led by Davis, Calvin Hawke and Jacobey Dolesh who were all 2-for-4 at the plate. Webster was 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI, while Davis, Garrett and Pearre also had one RBI each.
The Bulldogs and Lions conclude the three-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow in Wilson beginning at Noon.
