SUMTER, S.C. – The Barton College men's tennis team fell 6-3 to Augusta University of the Peach Belt Conference on Saturday afternoon on a neutral court at the Palmetto Tennis Center.
Senior Rafael Ruiz Velasco and junior Yaxi Pintado teamed up in the No. 1 doubles slot to earn an 8-5 victory over Augusta's Patrick Oliveira and Nameer Shamsi. The Jaguars claimed victory in the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches to lead 2-1 after doubles play.
The Jaguars took the first four singles matches, all in straight sets, to wrap up the match win. Junior Jake McCartney and freshman Jesus Gil each won in third-set super tiebreakers in singles competition after the match outcome had already been decided.
McCartney's victory came from the No. 1 singles position, while Gil earned his first collegiate win as the team's No. 5 singles player.
Barton returns to action on Tuesday, February 9 when it hosts Francis Marion University at the Barton Tennis Complex beginning at 1 p.m.
