Baseball splits Saturday doubleheader with King to open league play

BRISTOL, TENN. – The Barton College baseball team opened Conference Carolinas play on Saturday, splitting a doubleheader with King University at the King Baseball Field.

The Bulldogs (9-2, 1-1) earned a 9-6 win in the first game of day but fell 7-2 to the Tornado (5-6, 1-1) game two.

Game One: Barton 9, King 6

Barton opened up the first game of the day scoring seven runs on seven hits in the top half of the first inning. Junior Andrew Webster drove in the game's first runs with a three-run home run over the left field fence, his third long ball of the season.

Senior Ben Youngblood, juniors Shawn Montren and Calvin Hawke and sophomore Hunter Pearre also drove in one run apiece in the inning for an early 7-0 lead.

King got a run back in the bottom of the first and scored two more runs on a two-run home run in the second as the Bulldogs led 7-3 after just two innings of play. The Tornado scored one run in the fifth and another in the sixth to cut the Barton lead to just two runs with three innings to play.

After the Tornado added another run to its total in the seventh before BC scored two insurance runs in the top of the eighth to push its lead a 9-6 advantage.

Freshman Troy Maslowski pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save of the season. Sophomore Trent Fennell (2-1) allowed four runs on seven hits with a strikeout to earn the win, while left-hander Andrew Davis allowed two runs on four hits with a strikeout over two innings of relief. Redshirt-sophomore Benjamin Brann struck out two batters in one inning out of the bullpen.

Junior Blake Spangenberg finished the game 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored, while Montren and junior Tyler Garrett were each 2-for-4 in the victory.

Game Two: King 7, Barton 2 (Seven inn.)

King took advantage of five Barton field errors in the second game to seven runs (two earned) on just seven hits.

The Tornado scored a run in the bottom of the first inning for an early lead before Pearre tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI single in the top of the third inning.

In the third inning, King score three runs on three hits and took advantage of two Barton miscues to retake the lead. An RBI double from Montren in the fourth brought a run home for BC but a three-run sixth inning sealed the five-run win for the home team.

Sophomore Dylan Ward (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing seven runs (two earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts as Davis pitched 1/3 of an inning with a strikeout in his third appearance of the season.

Pearre was 2-for-4 at the plate in game two with an RBI, while Montren was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Hawke finished the game 2-for-3 for his third multi-hit game of the season.

Barton and King conclude the three-game series tomorrow in Bristol with a single game beginning at 1 p.m.
