BRISTOL, TENN. – The Barton College women's volleyball began its weekend road trip with a 3-2 (25-22, 19-25, 25-23, 18-25, 15-13) victory over Conference Carolinas foe King University on Friday night.
The Lady Bulldogs improved to 11-7 overall and 8-1 in league play to remain atop the standings, while the Tornado fell to 6-11 with a 6-3 mark in the conference.
Barton trailed 10-8 in the first set of play before an 8-2 run put the team ahead 16-12 following back-to-back kills from sophomores Hayley Marshburn and Angelica Acevedo. The Tornado cut the deficit to one point but Barton scored the final two points of the set on King attack errors to take the early lead.
The Tornado held an early 7-2 advantage in the second set as BC was able to cut the score down to 12-11 midway through the frame. King held onto its lead, ending the set on a 6-2 run to even the match at one set apiece.
King carried its momentum into the beginning of the third set, leading by as much as 10-4 advantage before the Lady Bulldogs used four unanswered points to pull within two points. Despite trailing by five points late in the set, Barton scored six straight points to claim the lead. After a tie at 19-19, BC scored six of the final 10 points for a 25-23 win.
Barton fell again in the fourth set 25-18 as the host Tornado forced a deciding fifth set of action. King once again held an early lead with a 6-3 advantage in the fifth set. However, Barton scored five of the next six points to take a one-point lead. After KU took a 13-12 lead late, the Lady Bulldogs scored the final three points on a Mariana Kedzia kill and two King errors to seal the match win.
Kedzia led the BC offense with 18 kills and 10 digs for her eighth double-double of the season. Marshburn followed with 13 kills, while senior Kaitlyn Micol added 10 kills of her own.
Acevedo registered her ninth double-double of the year with 44 assists and 13 digs, as senior Laura Peed had 13 digs on defense. Redshirt-sophomore Riley Bane led Barton with 16 digs from her libero position, while sophomore Allie Cullens contributed seven kills and five total blocks.
Barton concludes its weekend with a tri-match tomorrow against Lees-McRae College and Winston-Salem State University in Banner Elk, N.C. beginning at noon.
