ELON, N.C. – The Barton men's tennis team struggled in its spring debut, falling 7-0 to NCAA Division I Elon University on Saturday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Elon improved to 1-2 overall on the season with the win, while Barton fell to 1-1 following the loss.
One point is awarded in doubles against NCAA Division I competition, and Elon earned that point by sweeping the three matches. Barton's pairing of Yaxi Pintado and Daniel Radu was the only one to win a game in doubles play, falling 8-4 to Elon's Chris Humphreys and Felipe Osses-Konig in the No. 3 slot.
Pintado, a junior from Madrid, Spain, forced a second-set tiebreaker with Charlie Sullivan of Elon before falling 6-1, 7-6 (10-2) at No. 4. The rest of Barton's singles lineup also lost in straight sets. Mario Paccini defeated Jake McCartney 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1; Felipe Sarrasague defeated Rafael Ruiz Velasco 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2; Robert Lindgren defeated Nick Genest 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3; Humphreys defeated Radu 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5; and Neal Port defeated Jesus Gil 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6.
Barton is scheduled to hose regional foe Chowan University on Tuesday, February 3 in a 3 p.m. at the Barton Tennis Complex.
