WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College women's volleyball team took Southern Wesleyan University to four sets but fell 3-1 to the Warriors on Friday night in Wilson Gymnasium.
The Lady Bulldogs (5-7, 1-2) are the first team in league play to take the Warriors (9-4, 4-0) to a fourth set but could not overcome a .299 hitting percentage by the visiting team.
Southern Wesleyan began the match by hitting .357 as a team with just two error in a 25-20 victory over Barton in the first set. The Lady Bulldogs held a 5-2 lead early in the set before SWU battled back to tie the match at 7-7 and eventually take the one set advantage.
In the second set, BC built a 7-4 lead before the Warriors tied the match at 9-9 early on. The two teams played to five more ties in the set before a kill by junior Mariana Kedzia and a service ace from sophomore Stephanie Pingyin ended the match 25-23 in favor of the Lady Bulldogs.
The Warriors hit .295 as a team en route to a 25-19 victory in set three before putting the match away with a .333 hitting percentage and a 25-15 victory in the fourth and final set.
Pingyin led the Lady Bulldog offense with 17 kills, while freshman Hayley Marshburn turned in 11 kills on a .276 hitting percentage and 11 digs for her second double-double of the season. Junior Kaitlyn Micol recorded 35 assists and 17 digs en route to her first double-double of the year.
Barton will host conference opponent North Greenville University tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Wilson.
