CLEVELAND, Tenn. – On the final day of the Lee University Invitational Barton College split its two matches, defeating Union University 3-0 and losing to Campbellsville University in straight sets.
Barton 3, Union 0
In the first match of Saturday, Barton earned a 25-14, 25-22, 25-23 straight-set victory over Union (Tenn.) University. As a team, the Lady Bulldogs turned in a .211 hitting percentage while holding the Bulldogs of Union to a .096 clip.
Barton opened the first set winning six consecutive points behind the serves of freshman Hayley Marshburn to build a commanding early lead. BC held the lead throughout, hitting .348 as a team and closing the set with a 7-1 run to secure a 1-0 match lead.
The second set opened differently for Barton with Union going ahead early 5-2 before BC battled back to tie the set at 7-7. The two teams tied four times more until another 7-1 run but Barton ahead 18-12 in the closing minutes of the set. Despite a comeback effort from Union, BC held on for the three-point victory and a two-set lead.
BC and Union remained closed once again for much of the third set as BC was able to pull away for a 20-12 lead on a kill from sophomore Stephanie Pingyin. Union again put together a comeback effort, tying the game at 23-23 as freshman Alexandra Cullens sealed the victory with a kill to end the set and the match.
Junior Mariana Kedzia led BC with eight kills, as Cullens and Pingyin finished with 7 and 6 kills, respectively. Sophomore Laura Peed totaled 13 digs, while freshman Angelica Acevedo led all players with a match-high 24 assists.
Campbellsville 3, Barton 0
The Tigers of Campbellsville hit .333 as a team and held the Lady Bulldogs to a .090 mark as Barton lost in straight sets, 25-16, 25-19, 25-21 in its final match of the weekend.
Campbellsville raced out an early 5-0 lead before controlling the set from start to finish to go ahead 1-0 early. The Tigers built a five-point lead once again midway through the second set of action before Barton closed to with one point. However, the lead was too much to overcome as the Tigers carried the momentum to a 2-0 edge.
The final set saw Barton score the game's first three points, holding that lead until Campbellsville tied the game at 11-11. From there, the two teams played to three more ties before the Tigers gained momentum during a 10-6 run that led to their eventual match victory.
Pingyin led the Lady Bulldogs with 12 kills in the match, while Kedzia recorded her second double-double of the weekend with 10 kills and 10 digs.
Barton returns home for a Conference Carolinas' matchup with Limestone College on Friday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.
