WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College women's volleyball team claimed the program's 300th win as a member of NCAA Division II with a 3-0 (25-22, 28-26, 25-17) win over rival University of Mount Olive on Saturday night in Wilson Gymnasium.
Before the match, head coach Jeff Lennox honored seniors Brittany Edwards and Ginny Howard in front of a packed house on Senior Night. Howard totaled four kills and two blocks, while Edwards recorded one kill and three blocks in leading Barton to the straight-set victory.
The first set of action saw the Lady Bulldogs(13-8, 8-3) and Trojans (4-17, 3-8) play to 10 total ties as junior Mariana Kedzia ended the frame with a kill and a service ace for the 1-0 match lead.
Barton and Mount Olive showed why the in-state rivalry has stayed alive as the two teams played to 21 total ties in the second set before BC earned a 28-26 set win. Neither side was able to build a lead larger than two points in the set as a kill from sophomore Stephanie Pingyin gave Barton the lead before the set ended with a Mount Olive attacking error.
BC cruised to the straight set victory after hitting .409 as a team and holding the Trojans to a .038 hitting percentage in the third and final set.
The Royal Blue and White hit .309 in the match with just nine attacking errors as a unit, while Mount Olive recording a .184 percentage as a team and committed seven blocking errors.
Pingyin led all players with a match-high 15 kills, while Kedzia totaled 10 kills with a .360 hitting percentage. Freshman Angelica Acevedo continued her strong play of late with her fourth double-double in the last five matches, totaling 32 assists and 13 digs.
Barton continues to hold onto the top spot in the Conference Carolinas North Division as the team begins a five-game road trip on Friday, Oct. 30 in Franklin Springs, Ga. The Lady Bulldogs are scheduled to tip off against Emmanuel College at 7 p.m.
