WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.-The Barton College women's volleyball team was unable to squeak out a set victory on opening day of the 2014 season in losing a pair of 3-0 matches in the Hyatt Place Sunshine Classic hosted by Palm Beach Atlantic University on Friday.
The Lady Bulldogs start the season 0-2 after falling to Barry University and Eckerd College in straight sets. Barton will try and get in the win column with two more matches in the Sunshine Classic on Saturday against Quincy University and the host Sailfish.

Senior middle blocker Melissa Cochran posted match-high totals of 13 kills and five blocks for Barton in a 25-12, 31-29, 25-18 loss to the Buccaneers. Freshman setter Riley Bane's 18 assists and senior libero Amanda Grandy's 17 digs were also high marks in the match.
Barry posted a .231 hitting percentage while holding BC to a .081 mark.
Juniors Jasmine Serna and Tashalyn Begon led the Bucs with a pair of double-doubles. Serna totaled 15 assists and 11 digs while Begon provided a team-high 12 kills and 11 digs.
Barry rolled to the first set win by hitting .400 and then survived a marathon second set. The Lady Bulldogs served for set point on four occasions but the Buccaneers successfully converted on the side-out attempt each time before winning the final three points to win 31-29. Barton had its worst hitting set in the final frame to allow Barry to complete the sweep.
Freshman Courtney Wiseman and junior Brittany Edwards chipped in six and five kills, respectively, for the Lady Bulldogs.

The Tritons (2-0), who competed in the NCAA Tournament last season, hit a stellar .419 in sweeping Barton by a score of 25-12, 25-21 and 25-18.
Wiseman led the Lady Bulldogs attack with nine kills. Cochran added seven spikes and sophomore Kaitlyn Micol tallied six kills. Bane set up BC's offense with 24 assists. Grandy and sophomore Alex Ward were strong on the defensive end with 13 and 12 digs, correspondingly.
Eckerd set the tone of the match by hitting a staggering .706 in the first set. Senior Grace Jones led nine Tritons with kills with a match-high 11 spikes.
