Box Score

by Kevin Buczek

BELMONT, N.C.-Freshman outside hitter Cameron Hudson posted Barton College's second double-double of the season in a 3-1 (25-16, 25-12, 21-25, 25-18) Conference Carolinas road loss at Belmont Abbey College on Saturday late afternoon in the Wheeler Center.

Hudson's strong performance that consisted of 15 kills and 11 digs could not prevent the Bulldogs (1-18 Overall, 1-12 Conf.) from losing for a sixth straight time.

Freshman Nolan Albrecht tallied his own double-double of 13 kills and 10 digs to help lead the Crusaders (10-17, 4-9) to the season sweep of Barton. The Abbey hit .261 for the match with Dustin Buell and Brandon Kimbrell adding nine spikes apiece.

Kills by Hudson and sophomore Zach McCalla gave Barton two early leads in the first set but an 8-2 run by the Crusaders put the hosts in front 9-4. Hudson ripped six kills in the frame but Belmont Abbey kept the lead to take the 1-0 lead.

The Crusaders hit .400 in the second set to roll to a 13-point win and take a commanding 2-nil advantage. The Abbey only had two hitting errors during the second set.

Barton extended the match with a win in the closest set of the contest. McCalla led the Bulldogs rally with seven kills while Hudson and sophomore libero Nick Scalia each made five digs during the period. A McCalla blast put the hosts ahead 11-10 and BC never relinquished the slim lead.

Albrecht smashed six of his 13 kills in the fourth set to close out play. The Abbey scored the first three points of the final frame and never trailed. Barton pulled to within one, 9-8, on consecutive blocks by sophomore Ladislav Lelkes but the Crusaders pushed away with an ensuing 9-4 rush.

McCalla had a match-high 17 kills and Scalia totaled a season-high 19 digs.

Hudson tied his season-most kills total with 15 kills while his 11 passes were a new match high as he logged his first collegiate double-double.

Barton next hosts Rutgers-Newark on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
