BRISTOL, Tenn.-Sophomore Zach McCalla and freshman Cameron Hudson combined for 63.4% of Barton College's kills in a pair of men's volleyball road losses on Saturday The Bulldogs first lost to host King College, 3-1, in a Conference Carolinas match in Kline Gym before losing a heartbreaking 3-2 non-conference neutral site contest to Emmanuel College.
The Bulldogs (0-12 overall) next visit league foe Limestone College on Sunday at 2 p.m.
McCalla totaled 32 kills over nine sets while Hudson returned Barton's lineup after injury with 27 spikes.
MATCH ONE: King 3, Barton 1
The Tornado lifted up 20 more digs than the Bulldogs en route to a 25-20, 25-19, 26-28, 25-11 victory. King his .306 and freshman setter Matthew DeLong set up the hosts attack with 45 assists.
McCalla blasted a match-high 14 kills and Hudson put down 12. Sophomore Tanner Medina followed with five spikes and two solo blocks. Sophomore setter Jordan Robison supplied 31 assists, six digs and four kills while libero Nick Scalia chipped in 12 digs.
King (8-9 Overall, 4-7 Conf.) hit .533 in the first set to take the early lead. The Tornado gain momentum late in a close second set that featured nine ties to take the commanding 2-nile advantage. Barton extended the match by winning an extended third set that it never trailed in before the Tornado slammed the door shut on the comeback effort by hitting .450 in the fourth.
Six King players had at least a half dozen kills with senior Michael Koebel pacing the group with 11 spikes. Senior Ned Parker and freshman Adrian Parker each scooped up 14 digs. Sophomore Mason Casner tallied eight kills and six block assists.
MATCH TWO: Emmanuel 3, Barton 2
The Bulldogs won the first two sets but were unable to close out the win as the Lions roared back for a grueling 21-25, 21-25, 25-15, 25-20, 16-14 win. Freshman Ralph Rey ignited Emmanuel's comeback win with a match-high 25 kills.
McCalla and Hudson had season-high kill totals of 18 and 15, respectively, in the five-set marathon. McCalla added a team-high 11 digs for a double-double. Senior libero Chris Prevatte made nine digs. The 6-foot-10 Medina continued his steady play with eight kills, four block assists and two solo blocks. Robison tallied 44 assists.
Barton hit .375 in the first and .435 in the second to take the commanding lead with a pair of four-point wins. The Bulldogs cooled off to .129 in the third and .185 in the fourth to allow the Lions to tie the match. In the shortened decisive fifth set, the two teams traded points with 12 total ties before Emmanuel squeaked out the final points.
Freshmen setter Meshach McKnight produced 58 assists. Freshman Alex Morgensen recorded 18 kills and 12 digs for a double-double. Sphomore DJ Nelson had 17 spikes and freshman Setphen Diaz made a match-high 13 digs.
