PEMBROKE, N.C.-Five different Braves scored as No. 7 NSCAA/Continental Tire Southeast Region ranked University of North Carolina at Pembroke posted a 6-0 non-conference victory over visiting Barton College on Wednesday evening at Varsity Grounds.
UNC Pembroke recorded its sixth shutout and has now outscored its opponents 30-4 on the season. The Braves improved to 7-1 on the year and the Bulldogs stumbled to 2-5-1.
Barton will look to bounce back and win its second straight Conference Carolinas match when the Bulldogs make the trip west to Bristol, Tenn., for a 4 p.m. clash at King College on Saturday.
A penalty kick awarded to UNCP just seven minutes and 15 seconds into play helped the Braves set the tone for the match. Senior captain Sean Hoek converted on the PK for what proved to be the game-winning tally.
Rico Laitinen scored in the 13th minute before Hoek netted his second goal in the 32nd minute to give the hosts a 3-0 advantage at halftime. Goals by Martin Tomter, Sam Miles and Todd May in the second half doubled up the final margin of victory to six.
Junior starting goalie Vasily Yakimkin made a match-high seven saves in just over 60 minutes of work while classmate Dalton Bauer registered three stops in relief action.
UNCP finished with a dominating 31-3 shot surplus with sophomore Dante De Luca taking two errant shots and junior Archer Bane recording the Bulldogs only shot on goal in the 66th minute. The Braves were also awarded 11 corner kicks compared to just one by BC.
