Barton rolls past Chowan for third straight win

Box Score

by Benny Benton

WILSON, N.C.-Barton College banged out 10 extra-base hits – a season-high nine doubles and a home run – as part of a 16-hit attack in an 11-3 non-conference baseball victory over visiting Chowan University Tuesday evening at historic Fleming Stadium.

The Bulldogs (11-19) have now had at least four doubles in each of their last four games, and produced at least nine extra-base hits for the second game in a row. Ryan Daughtry had three doubles and scored three times, while Collins Cuthrell had a pair of doubles among his three hits and drove in two runs. Clay Martin also had three hits, with Phillips Williams and Avery Harper each chipping in two hits and two RBI. Harper's runs were driven home on his second home run of the year, a blast to left-center in the eighth.

Barton also received six scoreless innings of relief pitching from the freshmen tandem of Brandon Warren and Jeremy Lucas, allowing the Bulldogs to rally from an early deficit. Warren (2-1) earned the win with four innings of hitless work. He walked just one and struck out five, including the last four batters he faced. Lucas worked the final two frames, giving up one hit, walking one and striking out one.

Josh Catalano had half of the six hits for Chowan, which fell to 16-18 on the year.

It was Catalano who got the Hawks off to a very early advantage, leading off the contest with a single up the middle off Barton starter Mitchell Frazier. Catalano moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brandon Mack, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a single up the middle by Ryan Moore.

Chowan increased its lead to 2-0 in the second when Brett Overton reached base on an error to lead off the frame, moved to second on a two-out single by Colby Wiggins, and scored when Catalano followed with an RBI single to right.

The Hawks added another run in the third inning, as Mack led off the inning with a single, and later scored on two-out wild pitch.

Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the third, Barton began its rally with a big inning off Chowan starter Ryan Bradshaw (3-5). Michael DelSardo led off the frame with a double, and Daughtry followed with the first of his three doubles to drive in the Bulldogs' first run. Two batters later, Williams delivered an RBI double to right-center, and two more batters later, Martin collected Barton's fourth double of the inning to drive home Williams with the game-tying run.

The score remained tied at 3-all until the bottom of the fifth, when Barton took the lead for good with a pair of runs. Daughtry again produced a leadoff double, and was advanced to third on Chris Rawlings' sacrifice. Williams followed with an RBI single to score Daughtry with the go-ahead run. Williams moved to third on a double by Cuthrell, and scored three batters later on a two-out, bases-loaded error by the Hawks.

Barton collected three more runs in the sixth on an RBI single by Rawlings and a two-run double by Cuthrell. The Bulldogs added a single run in the seventh on an RBI single by Matthew Berry after Harper had doubled, and two more runs in the eighth on the Harper home run.

It would prove to be more than enough run support for Warren and Lucas.

The win was the third in a row for Barton, which returns to action with a Conference Carolinas doubleheader at Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, N.C., on Saturday.
