WILSON, N.C.-Barton College swept doubles play before a three upperclassmen picked up straight set singles wins to lead the Lady Bulldogs to an 8-1 NCAA Division II women's tennis victory over Chowan University on Saturday afternoon at the Barton Tennis Complex.
Barton evened its record to 1-1 on the early season after winning its first match of the spring. The Hawks depart town at 0-4 overall.
The Lady Bulldogs raced out to a 3-0 lead after doubles, only losing four games in tandems. Sophomore Mika Deane and junior Lindsey Frederick remained perfect at 2-0 with an 8-2 dismantling in the top flight. Sophomore Caroline Fischer and freshman Alicia Lasry matched Deane and Frederick with their own 8-2 win in the middle grouping. Senior Lindsay Toth and sophomore Francesca Del Pozo were credited with a default win.
Frederick (1, 0), Toth (4, 0) and Del Pozo (3, 0) all won in straight sets from No. 2 to No. 4, respectively, in the singles lineup to secure the Bulldogs team victory. Fischer and Lasry were awarded forfeit wins in the bottom third of the lineup.
Hawks sophomore Inesa Asatryan remained undefeated on the season at 4-0 with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Deane in the top singles showcase to prevent the shutout.
Barton will next entertains Meredith College on Thursday at 3 p.m.
