WILSON, N.C.-Sophomore Mika Deane (Auckland, New Zealand) won in both singles and doubles play but visiting Catawba College won four singles matches to rally for a 5-3 Southeast Region women's tennis victory over host Barton College on Friday afternoon.
Deane teamed up with junior Lindsey Frederick (Goldsboro, N.C.) to win in the top doubles match and the sophomore duo of Francesca Del Pozo (Lima, Peru) and Kristy Lievense (Wilson, N.C.) paired together for another Lady Bulldog win in the third flight. Both Barton tandems won by matching 8-5 scores as the hosts took a 2-1 lead into singles.
Deane, coming off a first-team All-Conference Carolinas freshman campaign, continued her stellar play to begin play in her second season with a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Catawba's top singles player.
The Indians (2-1 Overall) won at No. 2, 4, 5 and 6 to rally back for the narrow victory. Frederick was trailing in a close third flight encounter when play was stopped after Catawba clinched the decisive fifth point and a thunderstorm moved over the Barton Tennis Complex.
Barton (0-1) will host its Alumni Match on Saturday, October 22 at 2 p.m. to end play for the fall semester. The Bulldogs championship spring season will begin in February.
