LAURINBURG, N.C.-Sophomore midfielder Archer Bane recorded a natural hat trick leading the Barton College men's soccer team to a 4-1 Conference Carolinas victory at St. Andrews Presbyterian College on Wednesday afternoon.
The Bulldogs, who dropped out of the NSCAA Southeast Region poll after suffering a loss to North Greenville University on Saturday, improved to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the league. The Knights slip to 1-4 and 0-2.
"A great result for our program tonight, led by an impressive offensive performance by Archer Bane," said Barton head coach Matt Akins. "Despite giving up a second half goal we had a solid defensive performance led by our captain's Brian Riesenberg, Mitchell Pool and Richard Worthy."
Bane scored all three of his goals in a 20 minute window in the first half helping the visitors to the three-goal victory. The Greenville, N.C., product struck in the 11th, 26th and 31st minutes for his first collegiate hat trick. Bane leads BC with four goals on the season.
Sophomore Erik Pajunk (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) set up Bane's first and third tallies before scoring his third goal of the season to cap Barton's scoring in the 57th minute. Pajunk has at least two points in all four Bulldog games and is pacing Barton with six assists and 12 points.
Junior Richard Worthy (Cannock, England) was credited with an assist on Bane's middle goal and sophomore Danilo Matos (Lauro de Freitas, Brazil) had a helper on Pajunk's strike.
St. Andrews held a 19-13 shot edge but Barton senior netminder Brian Riesenberg (Fort Thomas, Ky.) made five saves for his third win of the early campaign.
Knights' freshman Michael Mutebi (Entebbe, Uganda) broke up Riesenberg's shutout bid with his third goal of the season, an unassisted marker in the 57th minute off a rebound.
Barton next hosts Southeast Region foe Catawba College on Saturday at 5 p.m.
