No. 39 Saints top Barton men

WILSON, N.C.-Senior Leandro Peron (Santana de Parnaiba, Brazil) was the only singles victor for host Barton College in a 7-2 Conference Carolinas men's tennis loss to No. 39 nationally ranked Limestone College Saturday morning.

Senior No. 36 Miguel Lopez Zuniga (Guanajuato, Mexico) highlighted the Saints victory with a 7-6, 6-2 victory over senior No. 32 Cesar Grobel (Sao Paulo, N.C.) in a matchup of nationally ranked players. The BC loss snapped a five match win streak for the reigning Conference Carolinas Player of the Year.

Limestone has won 10 straight matches, departing town with a 12-4 overall record. The Saints remain undefeated in conference play with a 5-0 league marker. The Bulldogs drop a second straight league tilt, dipping to 9-5 and 2-3.

Peron was swept in the first set but rallied for his victory by a score of 0-6, 6-4, 6-2.

The Saints won the top five singles flights in straight sets. NO. 5 Abraham Lascari Diaz (Tlalnepantla, Mexico) earned his ninth straight singles match victory 6-2, 6-4 and No. 2 Mike Stephenson (Bristol, England) picked up his eighth consecutive win 6-1, 6-0.

Grobel paired up with freshman Gabriel Araujo (Recife, Brazil) to earn BC's other point in the top doubles draw with a 9-7 win. Grobel-Araujo are 12-3 paired together after winning for the eighth straight trip to the court.

Limestone grabbed a 2-1 edge after doubles with an 8-1 win in the middle group and a 9-7 victory in the third group.  

Barton hosts non-conference Shaw University in a rescheduled match on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
