Bulldog men coast past NGU tennis, 5-1

WILSON, N.C.-Seniors Cesar Grobel and Diego Salinas highlighted play with two wins apiece as Barton rolled to a 5-1 non-conference victory over visiting North Greenville University on Thursday afternoon.

Grobel (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Salinas (Mexico City, Mexico) both won in straight sets to end the match for the Bulldogs, who improved to 6-3 overall.

The Crusaders lone victory came at No. 3 singles moments before Grobel secured Barton's fifth point. North Greenville senior Luis Campos defeated junior P.A. Desilets (Beloeil, Canada) 6-4, 6-0 to end a six-match win streak for Desilets.

Grobel moved over .500 at 4-3 with his 6-1, 6-3 victory. Salinas (6-3) moved into a tie for most singles wins on the season with Desilets (6-2) with six apiece after winning 6-2, 6-3.

For the fifth time in nine matches, Barton swept doubles play to open up a commanding 3-0 advantage. Grobel and freshman Gabriel Araujo (Racife, Brazil) coasted to an 8-4 win in the top doubles competition. Desilets and senior Leandro Peron (Santana de Parnaiba, Brazil) held on for an 8-6 win in the third flight. Junior middle duo of Salinas and Renato Mendes (Sao Paulo, Brazil) gutted out a 9-7 victory to complete the doubles sweep.

All three Bulldog doubles pairs boast records over .500. Grobel/Araujo and Desilets/Peron are both 6-3 on the season while Mendes/Salinas are 5-4.

Peron was on the brink of winning his singles match leading 6-3, 6-6 (3-1) when Grobel posted the fifth team point.

Barton and North Greenville will both continue to compete at the BC Tennis Complex in the 2011 Barton Duals on Friday and Saturday.
